The Ironmonger Row Baths opened in nineteen thirty-one as a vital municipal service for the residents of Finsbury. At the time, only four percent of local households possessed an indoor bath, so the facility was built with eighty private slipper baths and a massive public laundry. It served as a neighborhood hub where people could secure the basic dignity of cleanliness and hot water, which remained a luxury for most during the Great Depression. The council even provided free access to the baths for the local unemployed and pensioners to ensure the community stayed healthy during difficult times.
