Empire of India Exhibition

The Empire of India Exhibition opened at these grounds in eighteen ninety-five as a massive, privately organized spectacle. Hungarian impresario Imre Kiralfy transformed the twenty-four-acre site by erecting structures in a Mughal architectural style. The grounds featured a simulated Indian city with detailed facades of temples and palaces, alongside a theater that could accommodate six thousand people for daily historical pageants. This venue marked the beginning of a series of annual imperial displays that brought colonial culture to a Victorian London audience through both architectural reconstruction and live performance.
