You are approaching the central garden of Fitzroy Square, the only true Georgian square in the neighborhood of Fitzrovia. This green space serves as the heart of a speculative development commissioned by the First Baron Southampton in the late eighteenth century, designed to attract wealthy aristocratic families to the area. While you look at the orderly layout today, it is worth noting that for many years in the early nineteenth century, this ground sat vacant and was notorious as a meeting place for local troublemakers.
