The red-brick structure you see was designed with a specific, life-saving purpose in mind. Architects Henry Percy Adams and Charles Holden utilized a quasi-cruciform plan, which looks like a cross from above. By creating separate wings connected only by corridors and bridges, they ensured that if an infectious disease broke out in one ward, doctors could isolate that entire section from the rest of the facility.
