Harleyford Road Community Garden stands on land that once held a nineteenth century Georgian terrace. These houses were demolished after suffering severe damage during the Second World War, leaving the plot as a derelict wasteland for decades. In the early nineteen eighties, local residents associated with the Vauxhall Housing Co-op stepped in to reclaim the space. They began by planting vegetables on the site before officially forming the Harleyford Road Garden Association in nineteen eighty-four to oversee its transformation into a permanent public garden.
