Kennington Park Shelter Memorial

The Kennington Park Shelter Memorial commemorates one of the deadliest civilian tragedies of the Blitz. On the night of October 15, 1940, a German bomb struck a trench air raid shelter located directly beneath the park. While only forty-eight bodies were recovered from the rubble, it is estimated that one hundred and four people died in the blast. The majority of the victims were women and children, with some of the remains still resting beneath the park grass where they fell.
