Old English Garden

The Old English Garden is a tranquil, sunken space within Kennington Park that was designed in nineteen thirty-one by Lieutenant Colonel John James Sexby. Sexby served as the Chief Officer of the Parks Department for the London County Council and championed a traditional cottage garden aesthetic. He incorporated intimate elements like winding York stone paths, a pergola draped in climbing plants, and a small central fountain to create a secluded atmosphere. This garden remains a deliberate retreat from the urban density of the surrounding neighborhood.
