St Thomas' Church, Southwark

St Thomas' Church stands as a singular, red-brick survivor from a much larger medical world that once occupied this corner of London. Built in 1703, it served as the spiritual heart for the original St Thomas' Hospital, which operated here for centuries before relocating to Lambeth. While the hospital itself was largely demolished to make way for the expansion of London Bridge Station, this church remained, offering a quiet, architectural anchor to the history of the site. Its construction was overseen by master mason Thomas Cartwright, whose work under Sir Christopher Wren is still evident in the building's sturdy, classic design.
