It began in the middle of the nineteenth century as the infirmary for the Paddington Workhouse, a place where the local destitute were sent to live and labor under the Poor Law. By 1886, a dedicated four-story infirmary building was constructed on this site to separate the sick from the healthy inmates, marking its slow transition from a punitive institution into a place of medical care.
