Flower Gardens - Paddington Recreational Ground

Paddington Recreation Ground is the oldest public athletic ground of its kind in London. While much of the twenty-seven-acre site is dedicated to high-energy sports like cricket and athletics, the secluded rose garden in the southeast corner offers a quieter atmosphere. This space, along with the surrounding parkland, serves as a significant green lung in one of the most densely built areas of the city. The park first opened in eighteen eighty-eight, originally conceived as a work creation scheme to provide employment during an economic slump. Five hundred men were hired to drain and fence the land, transforming what was once a vacant site intended for housing into a permanent public space for the community.
