Marble Arch was originally designed as a grand, ceremonial entrance to Buckingham Palace. It stood in the palace courtyard for years before a massive expansion of the royal residence forced its removal. In 1851, workers dismantled the structure stone by stone and reassembled it here in only three months to serve as a new gateway for Hyde Park.
