People’s Mission Hall (Salvation Army)

The building you are approaching was once the headquarters for a movement that reshaped social work in London. In eighteen seventy, the Christian Mission, which later became the Salvation Army, purchased what had been a covered market to establish their first permanent base of operations here. They transformed the space into the People’s Mission Hall, creating a hub that seated fifteen hundred people and featured a soup kitchen, a shop, and a tea room to provide direct relief to the impoverished residents of the East End. This site served as the organization's central command before they relocated to larger premises, marking a crucial step in their evolution from a local mission into an international force for social change.
