George and Dragon, Shoreditch

The George and Dragon on Hackney Road began its life not as a pub, but as a humble shoe shop. In 2002, the owners transformed the vacant retail space into what would become a legendary queer venue, personally installing the bar and the facilities themselves. The result was a DIY-style establishment that felt more like a living room for the creative underground than a conventional tavern. It quickly became known for its eccentric, camp decor and a vibrant atmosphere where performance art, drag, and late-night revelry were the norm.
