The Pride of Spitalfields

The Pride of Spitalfields sits on Heneage Street as a rare survivor of the neighborhood's rapid transition. While many nearby buildings have been repurposed or replaced, this site has operated as a tavern since at least the mid-nineteenth century. It began its life as the Romford Arms, a name it kept for over a century, likely reflecting its historical role as a tied house for the Star Brewery in the Essex town of Romford. The building remains a physical anchor in a district that has seen waves of immigrants, from Huguenot weavers to Eastern European refugees, pass through its streets over the last two hundred years.
