Genesis Cinema

The building housing Genesis Cinema began its life in eighteen forty eight as the Effingham Theatre. It gained notoriety in the nineteenth century as a venue for so called blood tubs, which were low cost theaters that performed gruesome melodramas for rowdy East End audiences. These shows specialized in spectacular violence and sensational plots that kept the local working class crowds consistently engaged.
