The Blind Beggar

The Blind Beggar takes its name from a sixteenth-century legend about a nobleman named Henry de Montfort. According to the tale, de Montfort lost his sight during the Battle of Evesham in the thirteenth century and was forced to wander the streets as a beggar to survive. While the pub building you see today dates back to eighteen ninety-four, it stands on ground that has hosted an inn since at least the mid-seventeenth century, effectively anchoring this corner of Whitechapel Road for hundreds of years.
