Liberties of the Tower of London

The Liberties of the Tower of London functioned as a strategic, weapon-free buffer zone encircling the fortress. This territory was deliberately kept clear of permanent buildings to ensure the garrison inside could maintain a clear field of fire and unobstructed sightlines against potential attackers. The boundary of this area was historically defined by the distance an arrow could fly from the castle walls. By placing this zone under the direct jurisdiction of the Constable of the Tower, the Crown effectively created an enclave that operated outside the laws and taxes of the surrounding City of London.
