The site you are approaching stands on a stretch of Artillery Lane that held the name Raven Row until eighteen ninety-five. The buildings themselves, numbers fifty-six and fifty-eight, date back to the sixteen-nineties, though they were transformed in the middle of the eighteenth century into luxury shops for Huguenot silk merchants. These silk mercers, who were Protestant refugees from France, filled the interiors with intricate Rococo styling that still exists today within the front rooms of the property.
