Burgess Park Children's Splash Park for Summer

Burgess Park occupies a landscape that was entirely transformed following the devastation of World War Two. The land beneath your feet was once a dense grid of Victorian homes, industrial factories, and warehouses that relied on the nearby Grand Surrey Canal for transport. When the area suffered heavy aerial bombing, planners utilized the destruction to clear away the ruins and realize a vision from the nineteen forty-three Abercrombie Plan, which aimed to inject massive amounts of green space into London. The park was named after Jessie Burgess, who served as the first female mayor of the borough of Camberwell and was a fierce advocate for local welfare. The children's splash park now sits where these layers of history—the canal, the streets, and the wartime remnants—were slowly paved over and reclaimed to create a public lung for the city.
