Raine's House

You are standing before Raine's House, a distinct piece of Wapping history that dates back to seventeen nineteen. It was built by Henry Raine, a local brewer who devoted his wealth to providing education for the parish children. A stone plaque above the entrance still carries his original mandate to students, inscribed with the words, Come in and learn your duty to God and man. The building served as a charity school that famously educated fifty boys and fifty girls from the neighborhood. While the school itself moved to Bethnal Green long ago, the structure remains a survivor of the extensive changes and wartime damage that reshaped this part of London. In the alcoves on the building's facade, you can see figures of a boy and a girl. These are replicas of the original statues that once represented the students who walked through these doors to build a future in trade and domestic service. TOPIC_DONE
