The Wapping Ornamental Canal System serves as a serene, watery ghost of the vast London Docks that once dominated this landscape. Stretching about three quarters of a mile, this non-navigable channel was created in the nineteen eighties as a deliberate tribute to the area's maritime identity. When planners filled in the massive industrial docks to make way for new housing, they designed this slender strip of water to link the historic Hermitage and Shadwell Basins, ensuring a physical connection between these surviving landmarks remained visible.
