Sycamore Terrace features a long, exterior staircase that climbs directly up the hillside, connecting the street level to rows of Spanish Colonial Revival apartments. Built in the nineteen twenties, the complex allowed developers to pack dense housing onto steep, uneven plots of land that were previously considered unbuildable. Residents once included a young Bette Davis, who lived in one of the lower units while struggling to break into the film industry, often climbing those same concrete steps home after failed auditions.
