Crossroads of the World features a tall, nautical tower topped with a rotating golden globe. Built in nineteen thirty-six, this outdoor pedestrian mall served as the first shopping center of its kind in the United States. Its architect, Robert Vinsky, designed the complex to resemble a global village, placing an English-style street and Mediterranean buildings alongside the central ship. When it opened, a customer could buy perfume from a shop modeled after a Parisian storefront, then walk outside to find a cafe.
