The thirteen story tower at seventeen fifty North Vine Street is shaped like a stack of phonograph records. Capitol Records built this headquarters in nineteen fifty-six to accommodate the burgeoning high-fidelity recording industry. During the design phase, architect Welton Becket included a blinking light on the spire that spells Hollywood in Morse code. Every two seconds, the light pulses a steady rhythm into the night sky, a tradition that has persisted since the day the building first opened its doors.
