The Notion Way

landmark

The Notion Way in San Francisco is a narrow residential alleyway that cuts through the Sunset District blocks. Its existence stems from a nineteen twenties developer who sought to maximize housing density by tucking homes into the interior of the city grid. Residents access these dwellings by walking through this private-feeling corridor that remains hidden from the main streets. During the nineties, local neighbors fought to keep the path open against proposals to gate the entrance, preserving the right for anyone to walk through.
