The Prayer Book Cross stands as a tall, ornate sandstone monument rising fifty-seven feet into the air. It commemorates the first use of the Book of Common Prayer in English on the coast of California in fifteen seventy-nine. George W. Childs of Philadelphia donated the funds for the structure in eighteen ninety-four. Sir Francis Drake’s chaplain, Francis Fletcher, supposedly held the original service somewhere along this shoreline, though historians debate the precise location to this day.
