Five gold onion domes top the Holy Virgin Cathedral on Geary Boulevard. This Russian Orthodox landmark functions as the center for the Russian community in San Francisco. It houses the relics of Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco, a bishop who arrived in the city in the nineteen sixties. His body rests in a glass casket inside the church, where visitors come to pray. Construction finished in nineteen sixty-five, replacing an older cathedral that stood on Fulton Street near the Golden Gate Park.
