China Beach features a jagged, sheltered cove tucked between the towering cliffs of Sea Cliff and the Presidio. This small stretch of sand takes its name from the Chinese fishermen who camped here during the Gold Rush, hauling their daily catch onto the shore to dry or process for the city markets. While the rest of San Francisco built upward and outward, these crews used the beach as a private, quiet base of operations far from the chaotic life of the docks.
