Lands End Trail Eagles Point

park garden

You are standing at Eagles Point, a windswept bluff that serves as a gateway to one of the most dramatic stretches of the San Francisco coastline. This overlook sits at the western edge of the Lands End Trail, which follows the old railbed of the Ferries and Cliff House Railway. Completed in the late eighteen eighties, that steam train once carried passengers from downtown San Francisco to the seaside resorts of the Cliff House and the grand Sutro Baths for the price of a nickel. The tracks eventually fell victim to the unstable, eroding cliffs and closed in the early twentieth century, leaving behind this wide, level path for hikers instead of locomotives.
