Battery Livingston

Battery Livingston stands within the historical bounds of the Fort Miley Military Reservation, a site chosen by the United States Army at the turn of the twentieth century to safeguard the entrance to San Francisco Bay. This mortar battery was completed in August of 1901 and officially named in 1904 to honor LaRhett Livingston, a career artillery officer who served during the nineteenth century. The installation featured four large concrete pits, each designed to house four 12-inch mortars, forming a formidable defensive line intended to engage and sink enemy warships attempting to enter the harbor.
