The Sydney Goldstein Theater began its life in nineteen twenty-six not as a public stage, but as the auditorium for the High School of Commerce. After the school closed in the early nineteen fifties, the space hosted an eclectic mix of performers, including Allen Ginsberg, Jim Morrison, and the Pickle Family Circus. Its original name, the Nourse Auditorium, honored Major Joseph P. Nourse, a prominent administrator and former principal of Galileo High School.
