Spreckels Lake

Spreckels Lake exists because of a very specific rivalry from the early twentieth century. Model boaters, who were already active in the park, found themselves in constant, heated disputes with fly fishermen who shared the same water at nearby Stow Lake. To resolve the conflict, the San Francisco Model Yacht Club lobbied the park commissioners for their own dedicated space, leading to the creation of this artificial, clay-lined reservoir in nineteen hundred and four. Its distinctively uniform, vertical concrete edges were engineered specifically to allow boaters to easily launch and retrieve their miniature vessels, a design feature that sets it apart from the more naturalistic, sloping shorelines of the park's other bodies of water.
