Huckleberry House

Huckleberry House opened its doors on June 18, 1967, at the height of the Summer of Love. It served as the first emergency shelter for runaway youth in the United States. During that summer, thousands of teenagers arrived in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, often without money, connections, or a place to sleep. The house provided a safe alternative to the city's Youth Guidance Center, which was an overcrowded detention facility that warehouse-like processed minors who had committed no crimes other than leaving home.
