John Spencer House

The John Spencer House stands as a rare survivor of San Francisco history, having never been subdivided into apartments or commercial units since its construction around 1895. While many neighboring Victorian homes were altered during the twentieth century to accommodate more residents, this massive Queen Anne mansion retained its original single-family layout. This choice spared the interior from the common architectural butchery that stripped many other historic buildings of their period details. Because it remained a private residence, much of the delicate wood carving and artistic harmony from the late nineteenth century remains intact today.
