Fallen Bridge Park

Fallen Bridge Park occupies a unique space at the corner of eighteenth and Utah Streets, sitting on land originally set aside by Caltrans during the construction of Highway 101 in the nineteen fifties. Its unusual name comes from a bizarre traffic accident in the late nineteen sixties. A dump truck driver, passing under the pedestrian footbridge that crossed the freeway, accidentally left the vehicle's hydraulic bed in the raised position. The massive impact collided with the bridge and effectively knocked it off its moorings, leading locals to dub the site Fallen Bridge.
