Mexico Liberty Bell

historic

The Mexico Liberty Bell standing in Mission Dolores Park is an exact replica of the original bell that hung in the town of Dolores, Mexico. On the morning of September 16, 1810, the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang that original bell to signal the start of the Mexican War of Independence against Spanish rule. This replica was presented as a gift to the city of San Francisco by the Mexican President Gustavo Diaz Ordaz in 1966. It serves as a permanent symbol of the historic ties between Mexico and the city that shares its name with the town where the rebellion began.
