Mission Dolores Park

Before you see the rolling lawns of Dolores Park, it helps to know that the ground beneath your feet was once a quiet city of the dead. From the eighteen sixties until the late eighteen eighties, these two city blocks served as the largest Jewish burial ground in the Bay Area. When the city eventually decided that San Francisco land was too valuable to remain dedicated to graves, the remains were relocated to Colma, effectively clearing the site to become the public park you see today.
