Clarks Point is a rocky promontory that once jutted into the San Francisco Bay, marking the northern edge of the early city. During the Gold Rush, ships arrived here and sailors jumped overboard to reach the mines, leaving their vessels to rot in the mud. Workers later leveled the point, using the earth to fill the surrounding cove and create new land. Today, the deep water that once hugged the original shoreline lies hidden beneath the streets of the North Waterfront.
