Congregation Sherith Israel (San Francisco)

Congregation Sherith Israel features a massive, copper-clad dome that dominates the corner of California and Webster streets. Built after the nineteen oh six earthquake, this synagogue served as the temporary home for the California Supreme Court when their own building collapsed. When the congregation held their first service in the new space, they kept the building open to the city, offering a sanctuary for refugees who lost everything. The structure stands as a center for Jewish life in Pacific Heights today.
