The War Memorial Veterans Building is marked by the tall, arched windows and heavy stone pillars that face the street. It was built in the early nineteen thirties to serve as a home for veterans returning from the First World War. Inside the Herbst Theatre, diplomats gathered in nineteen forty-five to draft the United Nations Charter. Before the final document was signed, delegates used this stage to debate the future of global peace while the world waited outside the doors.
