Potrero Hill Community Garden

Before this was a community garden, this slope was a grazing ground for a herd of fifteen goats. They were managed by a local resident who became known as the Goat Lady of Potrero Hill, and she maintained a defiant presence on this vacant land. After the goats moved on, the plot served as a teaching garden for grade school students in the late nineteen sixties. By nineteen seventy-one, local residents began taking over the space as a squatter garden, eventually formalizing it into the fifty-one organic plots that stand here today.
