Potrero Hill Neighborhood House

The Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, affectionately called The Nabe, sits at the top of De Haro Street as a century-old landmark of community support. Built in 1922 and designed by the celebrated architect Julia Morgan, the building stands as a shingle-style structure that has anchored this hilltop community through generations of change. Its original purpose was to assist waves of immigrants, including a Russian religious sect known as the Molokans, who had fled oppression and were seeking to build new lives after the 1906 earthquake. The Nabe offered these newcomers essential skills like English language instruction and sewing, establishing a legacy of service that continues to shape the center today.
