The Society of California Pioneers occupies a low, unassuming building of cream stucco and dark wood trim near the edge of the Presidio. It exists to hold the records and artifacts of the men who arrived in the territory before eighteen fifty. When these pioneers formed their group in eighteen fifty, they spent their meetings trading stories of the Gold Rush and the rapid transformation of the city. Their collection contains everything from gold scales and daguerreotypes to handwritten journals from the trail.
