San Francisco State University

San Francisco State University began its life in 1899 not as a sprawling campus, but as a small teacher-training school on Nob Hill. Its first graduating class in 1901 was composed of exactly thirty-six women. The institution was forced to relocate multiple times following the destruction of its original buildings in the 1906 earthquake and fire, eventually settling into its permanent home near Lake Merced in 1953.
