James R. Browning United States Court of Appeals Building

The James R. Browning United States Court of Appeals Building is a rare survivor of the catastrophic 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. While nearly every structure south of Market Street was leveled by the disaster, this massive edifice remained standing. It functioned as a vital symbol of hope and a center for postal operations while the rest of the city lay in ruins. Only a single room, which is now the Redwood Room, sustained significant damage from the ensuing flames.
