The Prelinger Library began in two thousand four, not as a grand institutional project, but as a pragmatic solution for two independent scholars. Megan and Rick Prelinger realized that renting a physical space for their vast, ever-growing collection of books and printed ephemera was actually more affordable than paying for long-term storage units. They settled into a space in the South of Market neighborhood, a room formerly used as an industrial laundromat that sits above a carpet store.
