USS Pampanito

The USS Pampanito is a Balao-class fleet submarine, identifiable by the black hull sitting low in the water at Pier forty-five. During the Second World War, she completed six patrols in the Pacific. Her most frantic hours came in September nineteen forty-four, when she rescued seventy-three British and Australian prisoners of war from the ocean after their transport ship was sunk. The crew converted the torpedo rooms into infirmaries and lived on deck to give the survivors their bunks.
