City Tavern

other

The three story brick building on the corner of M and Congress Street features a heavy wooden door framed by white shutters. Built in seventeen ninety-six, this structure served as a social anchor for early Georgetown residents. During the winter of eighteen hundred, members of the Federalist Party gathered inside the Long Room to celebrate their political efforts in the capital. The tavern offered meals, lodging, and a meeting space, acting as a center for the local merchant class and traveling politicians.
