The Embassy of India occupies the Wadsworth House, a limestone mansion marked by its grand, two-story entrance porch supported by massive Corinthian columns. Built in nineteen oh six for Herbert Wadsworth, a wealthy heir, the house served as a private residence for society dinners until the Indian government bought the property in nineteen forty-six. The building remains one of the few surviving examples of the Gilded Age mansions that once defined the architecture of Embassy Row along Massachusetts Avenue.
