Old Stone House

The Old Stone House stands out as the oldest unchanged building in Washington, built from locally quarried blue granite in seventeen sixty-five. Christopher Layman, a cabinetmaker, constructed the home on M Street, using it as both his workshop and living quarters. While legends often claim George Washington visited for tea, the historical record shows no such meeting. Instead, the house remains a rare survivor of the city's early days, long before the federal government arrived in the swampy Potomac marshes.
